When scheduling your photo session it’s good to keep sunset times in mind! Sunset is the best lighting of the day because the light is softer and not harsh compared to at noon.
In spring (April + May) sunset times varies. The sunset time drastically changes throughout April and May, making the shoot times differ. You can plan on a sunset window of approximately 5:30-7:30 in April and 6:00-8:00 in May.
In the summer (June - August) sunset is typically between 6:30-8:30 pm. Summer sessions take place two hours before sunset, normally between 6:30-8:30. This means the shoot will be during the cool part of the day!
During the fall (September - November) sunset times varies… A LOT. The sunset time changes drastically during these three months. In September, your sunset session window is 5:30-7:30 until the third week. The third week of September will push your session earlier to 5:00-7:00 until Mid October. After the first week of November expect to have a sunset session at 3:00-5:00 pm.
In the winter (December - March) sunset is between 3-5 pm. December through early March, plan on your sunset session around 3-5 pm. Around Mid-March the sunset window will be about one hour later so 4-6pm.
With the sunset times in mind, I do recommend scheduling your session 15-30 minutes prior to the sunset window, depending on the length or your session. Starting your session a little bit before the sunset window always you to get comfortable and relaxed prior to golden hour so that every second is MAGIC.
Choose an outfit that you feel comfortable and confident in – you want to be able to move around and feel good in the clothes you’re wearing.
Make sure your hair is styled and makeup is applied to your liking – make sure you have time to get ready and that your hair and makeup look just the way you want it to.
Get to the photoshoot early – it helps to arrive 10-15 minutes in before the start time to get a feel for the atmosphere and to get comfortable with your photographer.
Practice your poses in advance – practicing your poses in the mirror or with a friend is a great way to what you’re going to do in front of the camera. When I was younger, I use to look at myself in the mirror to see the way my face and body moved so I knew how to move in a way that would be flattering to myself.
Have fun and relax – try to enjoy the experience so you can get the best possible results in your photoshoot.
Choosing a photo location can be a challenge, but there are some things to consider when deciding that might help!
Consider the lighting and what the area looks like that you're thinking of. Don't forget to consider if the location is accessible and needs a permit or permission. Also, keep in mind the weather and potential distractions or obstructions. Finally, think of any sentimental locations or the vibe you are wanting for your images.
And of course, feel free to ask for suggestions!
